it makes the solder melt at a much lower heat and makes it stick to wires and stuff like that better :D
use the almighty lemon juice or go buy some at rad shack
when life gives you lemons make flux

i actually dont think it affects the melting point of solder.

metal oxides are "basic", and flux is an acid, which dissolves basic oxides (makes sense). and thats why flux cleans metal. solder dosent stick to metal oxide.
