Building my N64p

Post by usbcd36 »

I figured I'd just start a topic for this, as I will have a lot of questions and pictures to post while working. I have acquired my PSone screen (and accidentally broken one of the wires that feeds the cathode tube, therefore I will be using my own variation of the LED mod, 6 30° 10,000 MCD white LEDs) and N64. I will be using the original heatsink, just bending it flat. Rewiring the expansion pak will be one of my main priorities in this project, as I want to play Majora's Mask when I am done.
I will also be rewiring the cartridge slot, though I would like some tips on that.

First pictures:

N64, sans case. Most of the stuff there has to go, notably the AV out (though it will be cut down and rewired somewhere else), the controller ports (they'll just be moved and cut down to size too) the DC in, the expansion port, and the expansion pak connector.

This is the PSone screen I bought at EB Games for $29.99, The speakers are connected so I could test it without breaking them out of the case, yet leave the screen in the case, just in case I have to return it . Some stuff has to go from this too, but I will be keeping the headphones jack and the original buttons from the case, heck, they look good AND they're free. The crappy Sony AV port and the AUX in AV port have to go, as does the power board. Also, that plastic spring clamp and the wire you see there is what I was using to power the sucker, EB Games wouldn't give me one. The reason the battery isn't there (in the spring clamp with the wires attached) is because I needed it to power the camera I used to take the picture.

er, second pic is the same as the first :P...anyway, good luck :)

oh yeah, did you get those leds in yet? I'd like to know if they really do seem like 10,000 mcd ;)...
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I just ordered the LEDs a few hours ago from www.ultraleds.co.uk, the package comes with 10 LEDs for about $10 (including shipping) U.S.

I'm probably gonna order some for me, too, since the LEDs in my GCp somehow got fried again :(

If anyone can help me with this…
I wrote:Ok, ditching my idea of the 3 regulators, how well would a LM317T adjustable (yes, it is 1.5A) work? The range it has includes 3.3v, but how do you wire it for that?

I have also acquired a few LM723CN adjustable regulators (they can generate ±2-37v, become a switching regulator, and do all that other crap). What I need to know is how to wire it to get 1.5A 3.3v switching for the N64. I believe the 12v line is fine with a 7805 (it doesn't use enough power to worry anyway) and the PSone screen is ok unregulated with a 7.2v RC battery from RadioShack, but I really need the 3.3v.

On a side note, I have found a local electronics supplier that sells switching regulators and tact switches. They get their parts from Jim-Pak and sell stuff much more cheaply than RadioShack. They sold me the LM317Ts (4 pack) for about $3.60. The LM723CNs were $4 for 4.
Edit: Ok, for some reason the ultraLEDs site won't work, it says the payment went through, but it still says that nothing has been bought. I can't seem to get the LEDs, though they seem to be fraud anyway. Nowhere else on the internet can I find 3mm 10,000 MCD white LEDs.

I just managed to find some 3mm 7000 MCD 30° white LEDs, all thanks to th3c4rd.

btw, you can order a psone screen from ebgames.com it's about $29 plus shipping (1 day overnight is $10, so looking at $40 in all on that)
BTW, the viewing angle on these is 30 degrees as well
They weren't exactly the cheapest (at $1.50), but they accepted PayPal and it all worked. They should be here in about 3 days, when I will begin rewiring the cartridge slot, expansion pak connector and working on all of that other stuff that is required in a portable. If I can't get RGB to work, I will end up using S-Video. I also may end up buying a boomerang controller if I can find one.

Eventhough the 64 uses a lot of power I wouldn't do the LED mod if it can be helped.
And I also though something on the N64 prevented RGB from being used.

I have to do the LED mod, I broke one of the cathode tube wires. As for RGB, I'll probably use S-Video if I can't get it to work once I can actually see the screen.

You guys don't understand, some N64s DON'T OUTPUT RGB, and I need to know how to find out which do and which don't. You don't need the caps in order to send RGB to a PSone screen, because the PSone needs the same caps in order to send RGB anywhere BUT the screen.

Never mind, mine should output RGB, asked in the screens forum. It isn't PAL either. I will find out if it does once I get my white LEDs to replace the cathode tube.
