if you ae using a regular NES, like me, you can probe the 5 leads from the "big silver box" thing on the ass-end. The box is an RF Multiplexor, Video Amp, and Voltage Regulator (the good ol' 7805). The NES can take 5V, at i THINK 500ma. You will need to amplify the video signal. Use a simple single general use amplifying transistor and a few resistors and you will be fine.

Looking at the component side of the system, and the box at the bottom right corner, the pinouts are as follows

1- video
2- audio
3- +5

I use the big silver plane as ground.

take a flathead screwdriver and pry it open
camcorder battery. Good size, good gameplay :)
if there are any at your local Toys R Us, you may be able to get one for $35, otherwise ~$50 on ebay.

Or just use 7.2 V and a PSOne LCD screen.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

Funny. I was under the impression that both NES1 & NES2 required 9VAC @ 1.3amps.

But then again, I may be wrong......

It all depends, if you're talking about the nes board itself, then it's 5V dc, but if you're talking about the nes console, then it's at least 7.2V ac or dc.

The origial NES itself takes 5V at arround 400mA. You dont have to pry open the RF Modulator/Power regulator box. Just remove it. It saves space. And yes, the NES uses a 7805 regulator. It can take up to 20v @ 1.5A.

Amps are drawn it will only draw 400 ma if that's all it needs.

He was just saying that 1.5A is the highest draw that the regulator can handle.
