Xbox 360 Laptop - complete (updated 7/15)

Here is the Xbox 360 laptop that I made as my first project. Everything works fine except the fact that the console overheats in about 3 minutes. I used 9 fans, beefy heatsinks, and copper tubing to disperse the heat. The only thing that I did different than shown in Ben's tutorial (http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/25/how- ... op-part-2/) is that I made the case fully out of plastic instead of using aluminum for the bottom plate. Does anyone know what I could do to solve this heating problem? Thanks

Update: I did some minor tweaking to the fans, and I created some sort of air duct, and I am able to run the console with the top off without overheating at all. If I put the keyboard plate back on, the console overheats in about 10 minutes. I assume I just have insufficient venting in the case. However, I might just go with liquid cooling anyway.

That thing's a beast! Very nice job.

You might want to watercool it. :P

Very nice, almost looks like Ben made it. 8)

You might need to have ducting from the intake vents to the heat sinks to the output vents. Make sure you leave some vents and fans un-ducted, so that the other components can be cooled too.

Thanks. I thought about watercooling, but when I looked online, I couldn't really find anything that would fit in the laptop.

Thanks again. Would you have any ideas on how to go about doing this? I thought about tin foil, but that doesn't sound like a good idea...

Plastic would be best. You could probably chop up ice cream buckets or similar things to make a duct with.

It might help your heat problem to make vents in the free space around the keyboard. Heat rises, so any leftover heat that the fans arn
t cooling will rise out of the holes.

The aluminum plate bottom would likely help with the heat issue (tied into the ground points as much as possible). You could try better air ducting and faster fans, better thermal paste if not done already, and making sure the connections are good with no dirt.

For better cooling you could try something like this guy did http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php? ... 843&st=180. Just scroll about half-way down

Wow, gorgeous! :D Great to see other people braving the odds and making something like this.

As for the heating problem, I'd be stressed to say liquid cooling is probably the only solution to such a severe overheat. As others have said, you could try adding some more vents and circulation, but I think that'll only delay the inevitable. Go grab a cheap liquid cooling PC kit and mod it up. It may be a bit of a hassle, but worth it.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have a feeling air cooling might not work no matter what I do, so I'll see if I can come up with some custom water cooling system that I could use in this laptop. I made the console extra thick so I have plenty of room to work with.
