Yes, UA, Windows XP allows you to boot off of a DOS floppy.

Actually, the version of Windows doesn't matter if you aren't trying to load stuff off of the hard drive. However, XP won't let you make a proper DOS boot floppy. :(

So you need to go to www.bootdisk.com , click on the top link, and click on "DOS 6.22". Then put a blank floppy in, open boot622.exe, and follow the instructions. Files will need to be deleted, of course, because the full install configuration bootdisk.com has fills the disk up quite a bit.

so i:
1. put in a floppy
2. click on 3.5 floppy A
3. go to format
4. click on Quick (erase) at the top
4. click on copy system files at the bottom
5. drag 'n' drop DigDug into Floppy A
6. open notepad and type
@echo off
A:\digdug.exe

7. save it as *all files* and make the file name AUTOEXEC.BAT and save it floppy.
8. and you're done!

is that all?

For the most part. You can boot off of USB drives, IF the computer lets you do so. (Most modern PCs do.) If this doesn't work, you can boot it off of a floppy (hide the drive internally if you want) and tell it to load the program off of the CD or SanDisk drive. Just make sure the main program is named the same thing on all the discs, and be sure the DOS drivers are installed.

There is only so much that can be run on DOS, though. You can probably adapt these instructions for something like DamnSmall Linux, which you can run DOSbox on and have more compatibility (Play DOS and Linux programs).

Good luck with your project! :)

okay...it didn't work.
i know i did everything right, because when i turn on windows and go into the floppy and click on AUTOEXEC.EXE, the game comes on, but when i insert the floppy and turn the computer, DOS says it's a 'bad command or filename'. i don't really think this is going great.

question: how am i gonna make the computer motherboard smaller?
question 2: how am i gonna make it multiplayer?

and also, i wanted it to be like when i put the game (sandisk) in, and turn the game system on, the game will come on, instead of running DOS first.

You need the seperate file, AutoEXEC.BAT, that has the file name in it.

Image

^Like that. I have the program, ddug.com, and it's entered in the autoexec.bat file. (autoexec.bat CAN'T be named autoexec.exe)

Oh, and DOS needs the full path to the file, so if it's in the GAME folder on the A drive, you would need to put in

Code: Select all

A:\game\dd.com

ContraPC ended in a Disk I/O Error when I booted up my PC, but I know where the problem is, and I'll fix it, I'm remaking the Famicom Disk System! In fact, I'm even getting round to making some NES Controllers for my PC, hopefully they will work under DOS, does Real-Time DOS work with USB Gamepads? If not I'll have to use a 16-Pin

EDIT: Heres a major snag, 50KB left on one disk, I can't fit any NES games onto that...
