You can hook ataris up to other ataris. Just look at the Vagabond special edition.

And stop spamming talking about whyville!

It was the 1970's!!! Come on!

BTW: My sisters doctor knows the man who made the atari, and I asked him (the creator, not the doctor) what he thought about it, and he said (this is true) "I wish I had never made the Atari, I believe it was a waste of time for all of the children who played it, including my own."

Re making it smaller, it was already small and feature-packed compared to the dedicated home consoles that were on the market then. The main reason it was so big was, it was originally going to have built-in stereo speakers - if you have a 6-switch unit, you can see the openings for the speakers by looking at the slots in the case top from the back side (later they patched the mold to close them).

Re linking, what would be the point? They already had 2-player capability in a single console, up to 4 players for paddle games. If you mean remote linking like over a phone modem or something, you should be aware that the internet as we know it did not even exist then. Direct dial-up linking might have been possible but would more than double the cost of the console. Probably nobody thought of it yet either - the 2600 came out in 1977, what year was the first computer game or console available with online or phone line linking ability?

Maybe you think we should, and maybe there are ways to do something similar to what you say, such as what Ben has been doing fo YEARS.
Either way, there's no point in discussing it.
