Trying to fix a PS2

Post by Monsterbox »

So, I was given a busted PS2 Fatboy to play with. They had already replaced it but since they know me, they didn't throw it out. (Love having friends like this. ;))

Anyway, I took it apart and gave it a clean-up (dirt and hair [ugh!] in the disc tray mechanism was jamming everything up) and it will play PS2 games and DVDs just fine. However, it won't spin PS1 games properly. Whenever it loads one in it tries to spin, but the disc seems to "slip" off the plastic bit that holds it in place for spinning.

My guess is that this is happening because the CDs that PS1 games are printed on are physically thinner than the DVDs that PS2 games are printed on. As such, is there anything I can do to help remedy the situation? I've got the top off the PS2, so there's not much I can't do to it at this point. I guess replacing that portion would work, but I'd need to get my hands on another busted PS2 to do it and I don't want to put any money into this thing at all.

Anybody played around with this at all? Know of any ways to help that little plastic hat do it's job better?

Help is, as always, much appreciated.

Any chance you could give me an example of one? I was under the impression that even the ones that didn't use the DVD features were printed on the same stock of discs.

Also, if the laser does need adjustment, do you know of any info on the net that might help with something like that? So far my searches are turning up sketchy-at-best info.

My guess is that it's the white circle that has a magnet in it. If it is i could sell you one i have enough PlayStation 2 parts to make 20 PS2s. Cheers^_^

That's exactly what it is. I didn't realize that the little plastic disc had a magnet in it. I popped the plastic out and then the "magnet" and tried to stick it to a bunch of stuff. Wrought-iron lamp, refrigerator, etc and it wouldn't stick to anything. How strong is this magnet supposed to be?
