Yeah, I tried that and it didn't work. So it's definitely not an issue with the screen, it's on the N64 mobo somewhere.

No good on either count. I turned the volume all the way up and all I could hear was the faint static of the speakers, nothing from the system itself. And as far as the batteries go, I just tried running it using the wall power supply and it still didn't work.

Assuming it is something on the N64 ...

The audio on my N64 just died today. It was working fine yesterday, but now all of the sudden it's not. The video is fine and it's definitely not the screen. Whoo, just went back and found a single faulty connection. I fixed that and it's working again. Quite a relief. Now all I have to do is put it all together. Assuming nothing goes wrong again, you should be seeing completed pictures soon.

Somewhat ironically, the one that I first used that lasted almost a year and withstood all the various tests I ran with it was one of the colored units. All of the ones that haven't worked have been black.
