Stick an ammeter in the circuit whilst the screen is running and that will tell you how much mA the screen is actually using. As daguuy says, it's proberbly only using 700mA maximum. It will use even less if you do an LED coversion.

I personally think licences make up a huge part of the profits for any large "entertainment" company. When I worked for a cable TV company, I was quite amazed to find that Sky TV don't actually make much profit directly from subscribers. They make nearly all their profit from wholesale - i.e ...

One thing I've found is that if you put one or two layers of something frosted (I used Scotch Magitape) or similar it gives a nice diffused even light rather than the "hot spots" that LEDs normally give. I've even seen someone on the web use a drinking straw!

I think heating up a solder point and then very quickly tapping it against a table top or whatever and repeating until all the solder is off would be the only way.
