Chain wiring the LEDs in the psone screen!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Chain wiring the LEDs in the psone screen!

When you connect all of the negative leads of the LEDs to eachother and then to indicated ground, do you solder one wire to one LED and the other to another LED and then cut another wire, to connect it to that same LED and just join it with the existing solder. And keep on doing that to all of the LEDs??

Wait a second... is that resistor wired to ground? I don't think that is right. Here's other pictures:

it could be wired either way, really, as long as it's in series with the LEDs.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I don't get how the resistor could be on positive though. Since the electrons go from negative to positive, wouldn't you have to put the resistor on ground before the LEDs so the electrons don't fry it??

it dosent matter. all the resistor does is restrict the flow of electrons, we arent using it here to reduce voltage (and you almost never should :P) . if the wire is a pipe, the resistor is a much smaller section of pipe. no matter where you put it, it will still slow the water down.

But isn't the whole point of putting a resistor to resist the flow in front of the LEDs so they don't fry?

ok lets try another analogy. a line of little kids holding hands. (i just made this up now..). if one walks slower, they whole line of kinds will have to walk slower, no matter where the slow kid is (front, middle, back).

it dosent matter where you put the resistor, the current in the wire will be the same.

more explaining:

current is basically a measure of "how many electrons", and voltage is "how much energy each one has". if you have a resistor that only lets 15 electrons though, per second, then youre going to have a net movement of 15 electorns per second everywhere. no more than 15/s can move behind the resistor because it only lets that much through, and no more than 15/s will be in front of the resistor because, well... where would any more come from? the resistor only lets 15 though!

in this particular application (LEDs) the voltage is not really a concern to us, we are using the resistor to restrict current flow. if we let as many electrons flow as was possible, there would be two consequenses

1) your batteries will run down faster
2) your leds will heat up until they melt. usually after about 10 seconds. each electron generates a little light and a little heat, too many and the thing will glow incredibly bright then melt.


perhaps you are thinking that we are using the resistor to drop the voltage of the elctrons, which is partially true, but its not the main idea here. even still, it would not matter where the resistor is. the total voltage supplied to a circuit is the sum of all the voltage drops inbetween. this is a fundamental law of physics.

so hypothetical situation: we have a 8v power source and or LED needs 3v. we need to drop 5V. if we pick an appropriate resistor, no matter where we put it, it will drop 5v, leaving 3 left over for the LED. in front, behind, close to it, far away. it dosent matter.

oh, and to elaborate on that last bit, you would get that 5V drop by choosing the right resistor to go with the LED current. 5V/Iled would equal the resistance needed :). you get this from Ohm's law, V=IR (I is current) ;).

Hey we just took a test on that stuff. Only we made it V=CR...lol, VCR
