This may be bit late...but on www.portablesofdoom.org , it has a list of portables and their difficulty from 1 to 5. I'm struggling with a 1.

the solderless method has something to do with scsi cable and connector pins and all that wierd stuff, kinda like this. the solder method is just solder wires from the cart slot to the outer rows of corresponding spots on the mobo


im the one that had that page daguuy posted, and im here to vouch for the "solderless" method.
i originally chose it so that i didnt have to deal with tons of separate little wires flying around, and also because when you have a wire soldered to a hole in a board, it tends to break off after a while. which is a pain in the ass.
this way, you can also completely remove the whole mess while you work on other things, it makes it a lot more manageable. it also is much less soldering (though not technically solderless)
however, that n64 has sadly left this world, and i have begun again. this time, i have something much different in mind and i will be using the other method. i will actually be using enameled wire, which IMHO is much easier to deal with than normal, stranded, plastic coated wire. its thinner in diameter and holds its shape.
