A rather useless idea from Fanboy...

Post by Fanboy »

I thought of a rather useless idea, but an idea nonetheless! A while back, in December of '05, 304 members of the benheck forums were on at the same time, so I've formed an idea, we should set up a time where we try to get 400 users on at once! I'm not sure but maybe we could set a date where we try to get the max amount of users online! Discuss times here!

I've thought of organizing that...a sort of, "log-on to BH at the same damn time!" day...

Yeah! We'd need everyone to sign on at the same time, give or take 5 minutes, that way, there would be a new record! I'm hoping we could organize enough users into doing something like this... The thing is, some one could simply log on and off, but the computer wouldn't register the log off time for 5 minutes this give all the other users ample time to do the same thing, breaking the old record!

I think the main reason for most of these records is anticipation for a portable from Ben, or a slashdotting. IIRC, the last record was because of a slashdotting.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

www.slashdot.com

Basically, it's when they feature your site, lots of people come and check it out, and you have to pay for the bandwidth overload...

From Wikipedia:
The Slashdot effect is the term given to the phenomenon of a popular website linking to a smaller site, causing the smaller site to slow down or even temporarily close due to the increased traffic. The name comes from the huge influx of web traffic that often results from sites being mentioned on Slashdot, a popular technology news and information site. Typically, less robust sites are unable to cope with the huge increase in traffic and become unavailable – either their bandwidth is consumed or their servers fail to cope with the high number of requests.

Links from other popular websites can cause problems comparable to the Slashdot effect – see traffic overload.
