NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I have terrible news. I was so excited about getting my first portable done and BAM! the damn thing doesn't work. I'm getting the backlight on the screen and a very quiet, high pitched screech from the speakers, but no game display at all.

. I did all Ben's troubleshooting, still nothing. I'm pretty sure I didn't fry the board but you never know. Any ideas on what the bloody hell is going on?

PS: If I can't fix it, would anyone be willing to take on the project for me

Well double check, everything. Video, audio, solder connection quality, grounds are grounded, batteries are good, screen is good, and speakers. I know that it's a very tedeous thing but if you want it working that's the best way to go.

And hey just remember it was nearly 2 years that it took Ben to figure out he had made an error in his soldering on the Atari 800 laptop. So you just got to look for that single mistake you (might have) made.

Could you have mixed up the audio and video wire ? That could explicate the screech... I suggest checking what Sparkfist says.

Although they implied it, I'll come straight out and say it:
It doesn't sound like anything's broken, just that you messed something up.

And I agree. A screech would mean that it's getting a signal from something that clearly is not sound. But it's getting a signal.

CHECK THE VIDEO/AUDIO WIRES

ground the audio and video, spots 5 and 6(doubel check that) on the mult-out on the SNES, and wire them to the 2 pins on ground pins on the PS1 screen's second slot. I can get you a diagram for that if you want.

Well if you are using a psone screen are you sure the ribon cable didnt fall out? Because it makes that noise if you don't have it in properly. I hope all is well

I've been checking all my connections and resoldering a lot of stuff, but still nothing so far. I really should double check the ribbon cable to the PSOne screen... it may have come undone, but i dunno. My A/V stuff is all correctly wired (i think

) but ill check again for the sake of my project. Don't worry, I won't give up! I've put way too much time (and $) into the damn thing. No way I'm quittin now!

PS- I just called my cousin. He builds arcade machines and does console refurb/ building for a living (by the look of his work, he may be just as good as the great Ben Heckendorn!!!) . Owns a couple arcades and has his own shop, too

! He's coming over to help me sometime this week, so I'll let you all know how it works out. Thanks!

EDIT: The sound (high-pitched ringing) is really quiet. I only barely heard it, and had to put my ear on the speaker to hear it all the way. Is this the sound you are talking about, Minkster?

Well, with my PSone screen, the sound is all the way up and unfortunately the volume down button doesnt work. The noise made a louder sound but high pitched. I suggest you do check the ribbon cable before messing around with wires. Just lift up the brown tab, reinsert the ribbon cable, and see if it turns on. If not, then it could be another problem. Be sure to check spots with your multimeter if it is not a problem with the ribbon cable.

Wow, this reminds me that I need to do some checking up on my nesp...I haven't worked on it in weeks, not to mention I have the parts to possibly get it working again

That's the spirit! Keep checking everything. Maybe you just have some other bad connections as well?

The two magenta lines going from the SNES to the PS1 screen are the audio and video grounds. It should be spot 5 and 6 on the SNES multi-out(I'm pretty sure my diagram has all the holes, google search and double check to see if the grounds are spots 5 and 6). Connect those 2 spots to the ground points on slot 2 of the PS1 screen(pin 4 and pin 8 on Slot 2). Doesn't matter which ground spot on the SNES goes to which pin on the PS1 screen.
