What type of battery does your portable use?

Reason I ask is I've been doing lots of research and experementation for my current Sega Genesis portable and in terms of price vs performance, I can't find a battery better value than the cheapest Zinc Carbon battery at 64 pence for a 4-pack from Asda (Wal Mart).

My portable uses 8 AA batteries. I can get two 4-packs of AA Zinc Carbon for Â£1.28 which, at about 950 mAh capacity, will run my portable for just over 2 1/2 hours. Sure, Alkaline batteries usually have more than double the mAh, but they're at least triple the price (cheapest I found is Â£1.99 for 4)

Cheapest Ni-Mh batteries I can find are Â£9.99 for 4 so I'd need to spend Â£19.98 for 8. Just doesn't make economic sense to me. I can buy two packs of Zinc Carbon batteries a week with my grocery shop and I would never really notice the cost that way.

Li-Ion batteries I'm not even gonna consider as they're WAYYY too expensive.

shazaam! 4000mah for jst over $10 (or under $20 including shipping). i'm using a dvd player battery (4200mah) cheap from the trading post for $21.

Yes dagguy, but they only ship to the US.

Nobody from Canada/Britain can get anything from that site.

They're 2000mAh 3.7V A-sized lithium ions with a protection circuit for only $3 each. That's $20 USD (that includes shipping) for 4000mAh of battery life, even more if you use a switching regulator to drop it to 5V.

Unfortunately, they only ship to North America (US, Canada, and Mexico)

But for those you'll need an expensive charger.

For my N64 I'm using two of these

in parallel. Only $4.50 a piece! They are also a standard cell type (good for rebuilding batter packs.)
They have their own dedicated chargers also on the site, for $3.00 each.

I used li-polys in my original GCp(s), and NiMh in my other GCps/N64ps.

I might use li-polys for my secret portable, but I may try li-ion...I've already got a great li-poly charger, though.

Just to give you an idea, the only Li-Ion battery I can find in the UK with 4000mAh is a camcorder battery at Â£44.99 - that's about $78 US Dollars!

Ni-Mh seem the cheaper alternative for rechargable batteries but I'm gonna stick with disposable Zinc Carbon for the time being.

Ray-O-Vacs IC-3 Ni-Mh batterys. They charge in 15 minutes in their special charger, and can charge at normal speed in any other charger. They have the AA's up to 2300 mah, and I think the AAA's are about 650 mah. And they're only $3 a cell, fairly cheap for the money you end up saving on alkalines.

I've never even heard of zinc carbon batterys before.

I think if I lived in the US, I'd be using either Ni-Mh or Lithium.

Zinc Carbon batteries are the oldest type of "dry" battery - they were invented in 1881!
