Firefox1.5 won't let me install extensions

I just updated my old Firefox 1.0.7 install to Firefox 1.5, and I have to update FoxyTunes. I go to the "Get More Extensions" link on the Extensions control panel, and go to the FoxyTunes page. Iclick the "Install" link, and it says I need to enable Software Installation. OK. So I add "http://releases.mozilla.org" to the "Allowed" list, and try again. No dice. I've tried several times, but itstill won't work!

Is there something I'm missing here?

(BTW I installed 1.5 over 1.0.7. Is that a problem? Do I need to do a clean install? Or am I just missing a setting?)

I've heard horror stories from people who installed two versions simaltaneously. I wouldn't reccommend it, try using it with just one version.

I'm having touble installing anything too! I suppose a reinstall of 1.5 might fix it then?

i installed 1.5 over 1.0.7 or whatever it was i had and it has worked out for me no problems, try reinstalling it

Here's what I did. Time to put Firefox on a 12 step program!

1. Back up your bookmarks. Go to the Bookbarks menu -> Manage Bookmarks. In the new window, click File -> Export and save as bookmarks.html on the desktop. Also make a note of all the extensions you have installed, as they will all go bye-bye, as far as Firefox is concerned.

2. Go under your folder in the Profiles folder, and go into the Application Data folder. (It's hidden, so turn on"Show hidden files and folders").

3. Rename the "mozilla" folder "Mozilla OLD"

4. Go under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Firefox.

5. Run the Firefox 1.5 Setup utility.

6. Start Firefox and set your homepage.

7. Now open the "Bookmarks" menu and select "Manage Bookmarks..."

8. Select File -> Import and open the bookmarks.html page you saved earlier

9. Now drag the contents of the backed-up "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" into the new "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder". At this point your bookmarks should be back the way they were.

10. Now go under the Extensions panel and click "Get More extensions" link.

11. Install all your extensions now. There will probably be newer versions than you had anyways.

12. If you installed AdBlock, go to http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/ and download the text file with the newest date. Then have AdBlock import it as its definition file. This is a kickbutt AdBlock definition file. It blocks almost all the common advertisement sites.

If everything went well, youwill now havea fresh install of Firefox. You had to rename the folder inthe Application Data folder because the uninstall utility leaves it alone, preserving all your extensions and settings for the new version, which it may not be compatible with. Renaming the folder makes Firefox think it doesn't exist, so it creates a brand-new folder. But all the data is still there in case you need it.

The FiltersetG is not extremely long, but it's thorough by using wildcards and such. That way it doesn't bog FF down a ton, but it blocks 99.9% of ads.

you will have to reset your settings and enter your saved passwords again after this is done, unless you figureout what files need to be copied from the Mozilla OLD folder to the new one!
