backlighting

is it possible to say backlight an Original Gameboy screen?

no, the color gets all washed out. you can front-light it though

I sold one on ebay a couple months ago. It went for around $50 IIRC, not too expensive. Of course, I've seen them go for $200 in "mint" condition with boxes.
