Mac mini or Dell Axim X51V

Which one Is cooler/ more useful? Also, If I got a mac mini, I would try to make it portable. Does anyone have a power connector pinout for a mac mini?

the mac mini......but yeah, i would wait..........do you have plans for a pcp i guess...thats cool. I might try a PCP with that Gumstix thing

You know I saw those Gumstix things quite a while ago, and they really look fairly useless as a PC for me. I can't really see what I would do with it because it does not have a practical way of running an os on it. I would much rather have a bigger PCP that could act as a real computer. If I did get a mac mini to portablize, I would wait till they are x86 because I bet that the new mac minis will use a Pentium M, and that will most definitely use less power than the PowerPC in the current Mac mini, and probably will be faster as well. Unfortunately, Rumors say that It won't be as small as the current mac mini. One question of opinion; Is it absolutely necessary to have a built-in optical drive?

personally, go on ebay and buy an OQO

Or buy one off their site for $1000.00.....it's worth it for the specs. But thats cheating...i would so rather make a pcp, than buy one.....and the drive issue...i dont think so, but if you want to put files on it....your gonna loose out on that

yeah...the upgraded OQO 1.0 is like $1300.00, but i've seen them for less than $600.00 on Ebay.

sweet as hell. I wonder if you can run OSX86 on that thing. Imagine a PCP with OSX, Ubuntu and Windows XP!

You know if your going to stoop so low to buy a Dell why not just build your own system. You can build a close to top quality PC for $500. But if you heart is set on a pre-built system wait for the x86 Mac mini to come out.

I would be finding a computer to make portable. Anyway, I found and SBC that I will use instead. It will be able to run Ubuntu.

I have a dell Axim x51v. I like it. If you are looking for a 100% toy, get the mac. If you are looking for a tool, the the Axim. Here is what i can do with mine...

PDA crap, appointments, contact info ect...
Weather, movie times, stocks...
Emulation, NES, SNES, Genesis, ect (nothing past N64, but PSX Emulation works!)
3D acelerated games! Looks like a crap dreamcast. Quake 3 works!
MP3, Divx, other media from SD, CF, or wifi. LOOKS GOOD!!!
wifi scanning (war driving)
Network "stuff"
WWW
Chatting (IRC, AIM, ICQ, Skype, Jabber, MSN, Y! ect...)
and more.

Pros: Lots of PC stuff you can do. MP3, Movies, and NES alone pay for itself. Wifi scanning, and network scannning are a bit part of my playtime. GPS is cool, if you care.

Cons: Get an extended battery, the original is decent, but not epic. No GOOD controlers yet. Only one, the China Plus, and it doesnt fit the X50 series. Its also expensive.

Thats about it. The Axim was designed to be portable, the Mini Mac is just small. Im sure you can do a lot of ghetto-rigging to make it portable, but in the long run, it wont be worth it. Any kind of Composite screen you pop on there will look like crap. Ive tried it allready. Even if you do RGB, its too small to use all the time. If you want portable (as in not needing a place to plug in at all) get the axim. If you need "carryable" get the mac.

Have you seen the sharp zaurus? It runs linux, so you have plenty of stuff to run on it.

The mac. but wait till january/febuary to see if apple releases their new mini then. That's about when the intel iBook should come out.

I had a zaurus a long time ago and had many hardware problems and ended up returning it. I got a palm Tungsten T again.
