Coming soon (erm...eventually): The PS2 laptop

Post by Teclis »

After viewing the magnificient creation that is the Atari 800 XE laptop, I had the inspiration to create a PS2 laptop...one that:

-Has easy access to the Hard Drive for drive swapping (between Final Fantasy XI Online HDD and HD Advance HDD) (http://www.hdadvance.com).

-Is capable of playing Final Fantasy XI Online on the go (with the option to either play through wirelessly OR wired OOORRR even dialup connections).

-Is capable of using wireless controllers (want the system to have as little mess as possible), supporting up to 4 for multiplaying fun.

-Two to four built-in 64 megabyte memory cards (1 for each player).

-Sports a fullsize (well, laptop fullsize) keyboard.

While I do have quite a bit of research ahead of me, I believe this is very, very possible...

-For instance, I happen to KNOW it's possible to wire an IDE Hard Disk Drive up to the slimline PStwo.

-I also know it's possible to use VGA outputs on the PS2 via conversion adaptors.

-I know for a fact I have all of the materials to do this. ;-)

I'll be keeping you all updated as often as possible. Wish me luck!

yeah, this could be done relatively easily :)....I'd suggest looking at either this or this for the keyboard/mouse :).
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I think I like that Idea. I would still rather have a handheld PS2. Too bad I havn't saved up enough money to buy parts.
Current Balance: $145.45 thats almost enough to buy the console (new)

I hope your good with a soldering iron, you'll be soldering on 44 wires to get the hard drive connected to the slim PS2.

Also why even really bother with disc swaping, use the hard drive image software and save the whole game to the hard drive. Then you can have the hard drive removable so you can swap it to another PS2 to put a new game on it.

The keyboard is required for Final Fantasy XI Online.

FYI, the you should see about getting a mini keyboard (like what laptops have) and be sure its USB, as that is all the PS2 will take and using an adapter would be a waste of space.
There are also PS2 controllers with micro keyboards on them... Honestly I wouldnt really use them, but you might find it useful (check Gamestop that where I saw it).

Stick to the usb keyboard...easier. Remember though, this sucker is going to weigh a pretty pound with all the above capabilities...however, it's still do able, so GET TO IT!!! 8)

Please, keep a good log on how you accomplish this for others to try as well.

daleighan, what is this hdd adapter you speak of, and where can i see it online? i like the idea of doing a ps2 laptop and am actually thinking of doing my own. i have already got a lot of it figured out, just need to find some parts.

Teclis, maybe we can come up with something together. i'm ,not sure what you had in mind, but you might like some of my ideas.
They said it couldn't be done, I'll show them. I'll do it my way and it WILL BE DONE!!!!
