costume contest ideas
I'm going to San Diego this weekend and attending a 'video game' themed night at a show. There's a costume contest, and I have to come up with something that's easy, but isn't terrible by friday morning when I leave. Unfortunately, I've only known I was going since sunday---leaving me with very little time to prepare.
(and I am not going through the trouble of making cardboard halo armor)
I've had three ideas:
black t-shirt, with white iron-on print reading "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." ...nobody in my office full of professional geeks got that one, so it may be a bad idea.
my next idea is just making a sims 'pointer' attached to a hat on my head.
Last idea, John Madden. I have a wig I can spray silver fairly easily. all I have to do is work on nonsensical lines: "Touchdown! He was running like a nun on Flag Day!"
please help me come up with better ideas. Something that's easy, but not too terrible. I only have a few days. Given proper time, effort and money I'd probably go as Mai Shiranui--which reminds me, because of the nature of the contest, girly or otherwise funny costumes are probably worth super-mega bonus points...
my spouse is going as one of our old PS1 dancepads--I'd like to be less lame.

I guess there is that new castlevania with the guy in leather and pants hanging loose off of him...but there's a fine line that's crossed between girly, and...um, you know...what that costume is...
besides, that would be really hard to put together. especially those boots...

but I suppose any number of final fantasy characters could be created with a cardboard/aluminum foil sword and foam hair. These are ideas that are valid, but probably lack that extra something needed to win, or even place in this contest.

That Sims idea sounds good.
Or you could dress as several characters from Kingdom of Loathing. Make a baseball hat look like a turtle, wear a bandit mask and carry a spaghetti spoon. You will ten be a Turtle Tamer / Disco Bandit / Pastamancer. Also make up a few cardboard discs, paint them yellow and add smiley faces. They're Mr. Accessories, the second-most sought after item in the game (after tiny plastic swords) (a rather obscure reference. go to www.kingdomofloathing.com to fully understand.
)
Brown pants and a green shirt. Taa daa! Pitfall Harry!
Blue overalls, red hat, red shirt, white gloves. Nah there will probably be a ton of Marios there.
tape a couple red balloons to your back on a couple feet of string. Instant Baloon Fighter.
Get a blue T-shirt and print this on it in white text:
...and go as an Interactive Fiction game!
EDIT: New idea: White T-shirt and blue jeans. The guy from River City Ransom!

Code: Select all
PITCH DARK
It is dark.
>GET UP
you stagger to your feet. A pefect start to the day. Too bad it will be the worst day of your life.
>TAKE GOWN
It's too dark to see!
>TURN ON LIGHT
You turn on the light and see your bedroom spinning. There is a toothbrush, scredriver, and your nightgown here.
>TAKE GOWN
You take the gown
>WEAR GOWN
You put on the gown. The tree out front falls to the ground, taking out the telephone lines. You're fairly certain the two events are unrelated.

Laugh and the world laughs with you; It's inhabitants are an entirely different story.

I've been halfway thinking I could do a really lousy yoshi costume by throwing green bodypaint on myself and a T-shirt reading 'yoshi'. maybe glue on some construction paper spikes, but more importantly a red saddle. ...I'd probably get stuck giving the marios piggybacks all night, though.
I could also put on some thick glasses and a viking helmet and go as a MMORPG gamer. maybe bring a D20 to help me make important decisions or determine their success. "Attempts charisma feat on woman in zelda costume--15 or above. YES! a critical hit!"
or kirby... I'm actually pretty sure I have some way of making myself pink. I could eat krispy kremes all night and whenever somebody comes up to me I'd just spit them out at them.
come to think of it, a tentacle wouldn't be that hard--the ones from maniac mansion/d.o.t.t. I wonder how hard green felt is to find. bernard is also easy to do...but people might not understand that it's a costume
or that shifty guy from aladdin who sells lives and continues from under his cloak
I'm pretty sure the contra outfits consisted of bluejeans (or redjeans) and a headband...
Or one of the characters from night trap! either the guys in ski masks with neck-clamp/blood extractors or one of the girls in pajamas fleeing for my life covered in blood!
