Half Life 2 intended for smaller PC's my arse?!

Post by demonofaj »

I got the demo of Steam, and my computer is a Dell 2400 (2.19 GHZ, 16-32 MB Video Card (can be 'adjusted'), 256MB of RAM), but the demo lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged and lagged, even with the settings at the utmost zero. Is this normal, or do I just HAVE to cash in for a new PC

Try just upgrading the RAM and stuff, memory is quite cheap, 32mb graphics card is a bit low, try 128-ish or something, try for something cheap, but by a recognized company.
And remember, once you know, you Newegg.

The CPU matters very little in this case, so long as it is somewhere above 1GHz and not made by Via.

Totokan, the MX440 is far superior to what most of the rest of these guys have, and the video card is the main bottleneck in this situation.

Demonfaj, is your video card an integrated solution? Sounds like it, especially with the adjustable 16-32MB frame buffer. If it is, you have almost no choice but to upgrade. An integrated solution simply will not work for a new game like HL2 (though GMA900 MIGHT with a good CPU, and newer X200 mobos....and etc :P ). You don't need a new PC. By all means, just spend 90 bucks on a newer video card (like MX440, FX5200, Radeon 9550+, etc) and another 256MB of ram, and you'll be all set.

ahh... it is good? I thought it was one of those pos integrated things. Well, have you seen the requirements of the hl2:lost coast add-on? you need 1024MB ram, a 6800 and up nvidia gfx card, and a 2.66 ghz processor (or close to those)

The MX440 has indeed been integrated into some motherboards. It is one of very few Decent integrated solutions. I loved HL2, can't wait for the new "episodes"

well the performance of your video card is greatly effected by what bus you use. I am on PCI and it's slow even with a 256mb 5500 GT. If you have AGP bus preferably 8X but 4X is ok too, you could easily run hl2 with a 64mb gfx card much like my current one only in agp bus, I Have currently got an mx 4000 and HL2 lags on mine (actually everything lags on mine). if you have PCI-E then you most likely can't get a card below 128mb, but if they did make a 32mb card for it you could prolly run it lag free on high settings, theoretically of course. integrated cards are pretty much the fastest bus, but the gfx processors in them always suck.

I hope that this has been a good lesson for you class, you are dismissed
