Usually they just cut off the grounding strip along the outside of the boards. Also, check for any video ports you're not going to use. They can usually go.

the ports on the bottom of the GC can go immediately, unless you want the internet adapter or gameboy player...the AV port and the digital output port can also be removed, but I'd suggest waiting until you actually have the screen to do that, as it makes it easier to test the GC when the AV port is intact
