you could check out http://www.carvingpumpkins.com/ for some patterns... the site is a little slow, but there is some pretty good stuff if you dig around a while.

Turn down saturation to 0 then just play with the levels... I can do it if you want but if you dont want me to thats cool.

Ill try turning down the saturation levels, but if it doesnt work, Ill email you my pic.

Just put saturation down to 0 so it is only in black and white, then change the color levels. (Black and white) Add a little blur and then its smoothed out.
