I can't get my desoldering braid to work for the life of me. I've already cut inches off, thinking it may hae been flattened, but that didn't work...

Should I just go to RipoffShack and buy a desoldering iorn? (because I've got about 15 PCBs sitting in a box that are full of 7805s, tact switches, LEDs and RJ-45 connectors and a bunch of SPST mini switches)

I'd call $11 investment for an iorn a good buy compared to the price of the components. :wink:

Well the only other, other option would be the old "heat the joint and pull while praying to [the all-knowing being] that I don't burn myself" method, but it's slow and a P.I.T.A.*

Personally, I hate using that stuff (braid). I bought the desoldering iron and I'm much more happier with my end results. I say buy the iron.

I use a desoldering bulb, only ~$4 at the Shack. Just be sure you have a small nail or something, because the solder is easily stuck in the tip. If that happens, they have new tips that are cheap enough :)

I use a desoldering vacuum pump thingy :P
Works nice for larger amounts of solder, but for finer stuff the braid works better (most times) :P

A desoldering iron is worth the $20-ish it will cost you. Braid is good for some things such as flat traces, but for pins get the iron.

I use the vacuum thing for through-hole parts and the braid for everything else. If you're having trouble with the braid, try putting a little bit of solder on your iron's tip before you start. Also if that doesn't work, feeding a little solder into the braid while its heated helps it flow better.

THe only way I can get the braid to work well is to put solder flux on it.. Then it works very well.. Also, you can push it together sort of like how you open those chinese finger cuff things.. It seems to work better that way to because the solder flows into all those crevasses
