Well, the best way to get all of this stuff is RadioShack. Here are my suggestions:
Buy the electronic components (there isn't much substituting to be done here), get a 7.2v 3000mAH RC battery with charger for your battery and get one of those boards with RCA jacks built in (they will come in even numbers only, get the one with 4).

Ben's online tourtorial says to leave the bottem ground strip so you can easily tie all the ground together.
Everything but the cap. you can get from RadioShack. So you might have to find another local electronics dealer that could help you with that.
I'm suggesting gettting things local, becuase the quanitites your buying will not make shipping cheap it would be best to just spead a little extra on gas.

Oh, and as for your case, I suggest either vacuum forming it (looks really cool when you do it well) or building it out of engraving plastic and aluminum strips from a hardware store.
