IR Vision

Post by Foxx373 »

While tring to cook up some ass-tastic projects to do with some of my screens, besides the usual stuff I do, I came across something intresting.

I have some "security cameras". Some are crappy CCD, others are higher end ones. The only thing that matters in this case is that it is CCD based. While doing some diging on the internet on how these cameras were built, i relaized that the CCDs can see into the IR range. The only thing that keeps them from seeing IR is a small glass or plastic filter. Its usually a small square piece of plastic that has a "solar" or "holographic" color to it. Pop it off, or otherwise remove it, and it lets the camera see IR again!

I have done this to 2 composite cameras, and a webcam. I would take some pics of all of this, but the piece of glass i removed is way too small to be photographed.

Im sure most of the people here are smart enough to take apart a simple digital camera or CCD Based camera, look for the piece of filter'd glass in the lens assembally, and remove it. .

Add a few IR LEDs available at radioshack, and you now have a day/night camera. Give me some time and I will try and post some "screenshots" from my cams.

EDIT: One of the cams I did this to was an x-10 wireless camera... Really easy to do!

yeah, some camcorders can see into the ir range too, a good example is the sony handycam with nightshot or nite-o-lux, with slight modification you can use the IR mode during the day with...interesting results. unfortunatly i dont own one :( lol

Very nice. Get some pictures, or even better, a video clip!
