Boy I am topic-man today! Ok, now list the top 5 or so systems you think are underrated, and why. This can mean underrated in their time or underrated now when looking back.

well, I don't know about five, but one of my personal favorites was the Gamegear, and it's usually pretty underrated.....it was the first portable game system I'd ever owned, so the games I played are now revered as classics for me
....
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

My votes are:
#1: Sega Genesis. People complain it didn't have enough RPG's. Well, a lot of other people didn't care! (Myself included) It DID have a ton of good sports titles and lots of stuff not found on other systems. (Sonic, EA, arcade ports) Looking back now it's like the bastard system that time forgot, but I won't! Mine's still hooked up! Maybe I'm biased, I don't know.
#2: N64. For my money this kicks the crap outta the PSone. The draw distances were very impressive (compared to the, what looked like, 10 foot draw distance on the PSone) and it had texture smoothing and all that jazz. Plus the controllers gave a rebirth to analog, not since seen the Atari 5200. Also cartridges had a great feature - NO LOAD TIMES! Yahoo!
#3: Sega CD-ROM. Again with the Sega! Ok it had a lot of crap games, mostly made by Digital Pictures. But even those I enjoyed, on the same level I enjoy crappy 50's horror flicks. Then of course you had your RPG's in spades, mostly the conversions done by Crystal Dynamics. Y's, Lunar, all classics. Plus some not-bad games like Sonic CD as well. A niche system, but in the grand scheme of things not really a failure either. Over the past decade I've probably played Sega CD more than I will ever want to admit. (Or maybe I just did)

Yea, I don't think the genny counts, since any home that didn't have an SNES had a Genesis.
If it does though, its gotta be one of my all-time favorite consoles. I have logged more hours playing Sonic the Hedgehog games than any other game or game series ever.

2 "pong" systems, Atari 2600, Odyssey2, Intellivision III, Top Loading NES, GameBoy Pocket, Sega Genesis 3, Sega Nomad, Game.com, N64, Playstation, Dreamcast, GameCube, XBox

dreamcast> how much more underrated could you get? it was great, and everybody dropped it like it was diseased when PS2 came out. They're $15 at thrift stores now...PS1's are $20...
Turbo GraFX> it was really only underrated in the US... Great games, but since it was so totally ignored all the Mega-great games never hit the country.
all ataris aside from the 2600> you say atari to something and 2600 is the only thing that pops into their little brains. A shame for all the better systems... try as I might, I've never been a 2600 fan.
Cybiko> games were free, and easy to make with the supplied tools. Wireless 'intertainment' rocked! Why didn't ever 8-bit computer freak jump on this bandwagon?
Nuon> Sure it only played a handful of games but one was Tempest 3000. This math-heavy 128-bit system was such a unique idea that most of it's potential uses aren't being tapped today. I would like to see more voxels...

That was Ben's 600th post on these forums!benheckc wrote:My votes are:

Anyways, I'm going to be attacked for this, but I think the Intellivision is very underrated. Maybe it's just because that was one of my first systems, but sime of my 50 or so games were pretty good. I also find that many younger people really underrate the 2600 and NES, because they grew up spoiled by newer systems.

Sega Genny, I don't reallly care about most ol' school RPGs and I kinda liked The Genny more than the N64....
N64, I didn't hear about this playstation crap untill a year after my N64.
Saturn, Segata Sanshiro! The Saturn has some great games. In Japan. (or Bittorent)

Heh, I like Ben's choices...Go SEGA! Except the N64 wasn't really that underrated and it's hard to compare it to PSOne when it was released 2 years later. But it did have Sin & Punishment...the most kickass game in almost 10 years.
Well, I'm gonna list some obscure systems that were incredible. And of course, they're all Sega systems =P
#1 Hitatchi Hi-Saturn: Not only is it the smallest Saturn ever made (and Hitatchi had to work only with the original components), it has GPS car navigation, built in Kareoke, bundled Video CD card, AND has a beautiful 4 inch LCD attatchment. The most insane official hardware ever produced and easily one of the (if not the) finest systems ever made. Go Hitatchi and Sega! Now if only it didn't cost $2000... =(
#2 Laseractive: A Laserdisc game system? Yup, Pioneer made one in 1993. It took 'game packs' that were game systems in themselves. One was a Sega Genesis/CD and the other was PCE/Super CD-Rom. It also had a Kareoke pack. So In ONE system you have Laserdiscs (near if not DVD quality video), CDs, Kareoke, Sega Genesis/MD, PCE, Super CD-Rom, AND they even made Mega LD games just for the system (Laserdisc Genesis games basically). Oh, and it also has Digital Optical output for amazing sound. Incredible system and you can get em used today for about $200-$250
#3 Sega Nomad: Are you kidding? A 4 inch RGB screen, TV compatible, and 2 player compatible portable Genesis? And it was made in 1995! Literally 4 YEARS ahead of its time. It beats the crap out of Gameboy Color released in 1997...how sad Nintendo. And it all failed because it ONLY had 4 hours battery life on its rechargeable battery pack. What a bunch of crap. Easily the greatest officially produced portable gaming system ever made.
#4 Sega 32x: Yup, that's right. 32X. Commonly known as Sega's worst system and largest commercial failure, the 32X was actually one hell of a piece of hardware that never had a chance. Only 39 titles were made before its brief execution when Sony entered the market. And this thing has GREAT games! The first arcade perfect conversions of Space Harrier and After Burner to ever hit a home console. Other fantastic titles include Tempo, Spiderman Web Of Fire, Virtua Fighter, Shadow Squadron, Knuckles Chaoticx, Doom, Virtua Racing, and Kolibri (eh, I don't think I spelled that right). That's a lot of great games for a system that had a life span of about a year and only 39 titles.
#5 Sega CD: Another Sega Console way ahead of its time. I believe this was the first home CD gaming system capable of 3D graphics. The loads of crappy software as Ben mentioned is what killed the system, but there were so many gems there too. Robo Aleste, Sonic CD, Lunar, Lunar 2, Popful Mail, Snatcher, Lords Of Thunder, Soul Star, etc...I could name over 50 great titles. Great Hardware and great software, it's a shame it never really took off.

I think you mean the Hi-Saturn NAVI (There's a normal HI-Saturn, which is still one of the best saturns with the best VCD quality)segasonicfan wrote:

well, since the Nomad is techinally just a Genesis portable, it doesn't really count as a system seperate from the Genesis, but you're right, as far as portables goes, the Nomad was definitely underrated!!!segasonicfan wrote:#3 Sega Nomad: Are you kidding? all those times visiting Portugal and being able to play my favorite Genesis games was all possible because of the Nomad
Without games my life would have no meaning.
