Could my N64 be fried???

Post by chodges84 »

My Portable 64 was going so well. I'd removed all the cartridge slots, the A/V port and power port (and at this point it was still working.).

This afternoon I thought I'd re-locate the cartridge slot. I was going to do it like *o* did, but can't get my hand's on any pin headers, so I thought 'sod it', i'll plug the cart slot into a SCSI cable and solder the other ends directly onto the board. Unfortunately on about pin 10, i accidently went overboard with the solder and soldered 2 pins together. I managed to unsolder it, but it took a bit of time. At this point, I removed all the cables I had soldered, and plug the cart slot in again to make sure it would work, and it didn't.

The LED on the N64 comes on, but there is no sound or video? Anyone got any ideas? Does it sound like it has been fried?

ANy help would be appreciated.

it could be fried but maybe not all the pins on the cart slot are touching the mobo :?

yu seem to have suffered the same problem as me, i coodnt get the A/V circuit to power up... it may be fried, or yur RAM could be... try removing the ram and boot it up for 10 secs, then stick it bak in. or try a different pack.

turns out thoe for me, it was fried, i dint realize that but it dint matter becuz the 12v line fried shortler after...

and i swear, theres sum kind of extra force acting on solder, i was hacking the controller and i witness a glob of solder float across the board about an inch before planting itself on the center chip and fusing 3 leads together...

If you just slid the cart connector back into the mobo it probably is not making solid contact on all of it's pins. You can either retry moving it or solder it back to the mobo to test it.

Well, there are fuses on the video and audio lines, that could be it. Check with a multimeter to see if they blew. If they did, then just jump 'em with a piece of wire :)

oh man... you tell me this AFTER my leg gets caught on the A/V cable and rips the mobo 20 feet across the room...

heh... ill have to keep that in mind.

Well I went back and carried on soldering the pins on the cart slot last night. I think I got them all on ok, but it didn't work. I'm gonna try again tonight though, as one has already come off, and it was pretty dark when I finished, as the light was crap, and it's done my eyes in a bit.

I've also found a place to get some pin headers, which makes about 5 times more annoyed. I think I'll get some and if they don't work, I'll just get a new N64 and move the cartridge slot before I do anything else.

I've got a hlf finished N64p now, it'd be 95% done now if I hadn't of knackered it

... at leas you didnt attempt to hard wire the expansion pak! I did, just to realize the pak was dead before I started. an hour of soldering ~80 SMT points for nothing.

I was thinking of hard wiring the exp pak as well. I've barely got any depth to my case, although the jumper pak will just fit in. How long did it take you.

It took me about an hour to do the 48 points on the board, but it has left me really sore today (I like to do it lying down, as I can get up close, but Lying on the patio has really done my joints in (also a piece of solder flicked right between my eyes - could've really hurt)).

now I've finished work i might have a good look at the board - it annoys me so much...
