Analog Stick for Mario64DS touch screen interface: possible?
Ever since I tried out Super Mario 64 DS, I've been wondering about whether it would be feasible to rig up a gadget that clamps over the touch screen wherein an analog stick sits somewhere--either over the touch screen or possibly off below the D-pad but still connected to the screen in some way--and something automatically make contact with the screen in the circular analog stick substitute on the DS touch screen to simulate an actual analog stick. It seems to me that something like this may be fairly simple or ridiculously complicated, and if any place can help me with this, it's this place. Any thoughts on such a venture?

But the D-pad is limited in SM64DS. You can't run with it alone; you have to use the run button, as opposed to the touch screen analog stick where moving your stylus or thumb farther away from the initial point of contact causes Mario to move more quickly. The only way you can really get the controls like they were in the 64 version is to somehow get a stick onto the DS.
The thing that would go over the touchscreen would be like 3 inches thick, it'd need a cut-off and modded stylus with a spring in it, then a pair of gears, then the analog stick.
Could you do this? Yes.
Could you go insane in the process, and go insane as an aftereffect of using this masive thing? Also yes.

Hehe, that's what got me thinking about this again. Hm. So what if you took an analog stick off of some other system--a N64 stick might actually work better for something like this--and work out a way to clamp it onto the DS under the D-pad. That's certainly possible, so the actual problem here is getting a way to make it interface with the touch screen. I guess a small metal-or-some-such rod could fit onto the neck of the stick at the right point to make the motions of it correspond with the radius of the analog circle on the touch screen; if it gave you too little play you wouldn't be able to move into the run zone, and if it gave you too much it would move the circle, basically decalibrating the system. Now, once you have a rod and a stylus tip onto the end of it, I guess that only other thing to do would be to work out a way to keep the rod at the right distance from the DS and a way to keep it from turning. It would have to remain oriented in the same direction all the time and merely move like those rods that connect oldschool train wheels together. Huh. This could actually work.
EDIT: Soundwave, the stick doesn't necessarily have to cover the touch screen contact point.

ZING!
Besides, wouldn't something like that obstruct the screen? (smacks head) Of course it would.
You can always hack an analog stick to the d-pad using pots and oscillators...

The general idea of what I'm talking about. The stick would have a cap, of course, it's just removed in this sketch. The arrows on the screen are of course the camera buttons in Standard Mode on SM64DS, which would have to be avoided by the contraption.

The problem is getting the connecting rod to remain pointed in the right direction.
EDIT: It seems that the circle could neatly fit between the camera buttons on the screen.

did you post that on a DS forum........i think it was DSlinux....Motoman wrote:i just cut of the top of a PSone analog stick and glued it to my D pad. And from that day on the system never closed....(*chills down spine*)
edit: You know this would probably only work for SM64DS and probably screw up the other games.....
