How to use a ps3 controller directly on the n64 or gamcube
I love the ps3 controller, it has a one of kind feel, that fits me like no other. My question how would I go about having the n64 play a game like mario 64 and controller it with a Ps3 controlller without using an emulator. The deal is this I have seen countless adapter on the net but there are no wirless adapter that I can use directly the the n64. To this day I just stated learing about hacking consloes, this would be my first project, so looking for help to complete such a task; so if you guys and gals out there explaining it if I were two, this is somewhat new and confusing. SOS HELP HELP

Even if you could, the layout on the N64 with A, B + C-buttons ..and the Playstation layout of X, l_l, /\, O completely clash, and would make everything difficult to play. Only way around that would be to mod the controller with an extra couple of buttons, but it'd be very obvious

It might be easier to use a PS2 controller instead of a PS3 controller.
I'd also try to map the GC d-pad to both the d-pad and the left stick on the PS2 controller. (If the vertical axis goes over a certain value, the up button is on. If it goes under a different value, the down button is on. Same principle for the horizontal axis and Left/Right.)
You'll probably want to transplant the guts of the C stick into the right analog stick, since the C stick doesn't use potentiometers like the analog sticks do. (In which case you'll definitely have to use L3 as Z and L2/R2 as A/B. Maybe wire Select to the Z button also, just for good measure.)
I don't think extra buttons would be that needed. Either map A/B to L3/R3 and Z to L2/R2, or map A/B to L2/R2 and Z to one or both of L3/R3. (The L3/R3 buttons are pressed by pressing in on the L/R analog sticks. Even people who play a lot of Playstation games often don't know where L3/R3 are because so few games actually make use of them.)lucidPerspective wrote:Even if you could, the layout on the N64 with A, B + C-buttons ..and the Playstation layout of X, l_l, /\, O completely clash, and would make everything difficult to play. Re: How to use a ps3 controller directly on the n64 or gamcube
you can use a ps2 controller directly on a gamecube with a $10 adapter from ebay.
cool story?
so if the dpad is on the left analog stick, what are we going to use for an analog stick????
the cstick does use potentiometers, whole point of it being a c stick, and if your wanting to replace c buttons then you can easily mod the ps2/3 analog stick to be digital.
l3/r3 are silly to press, the ps2 controller has enough to cover the gamecube without using them. lets go through it for arguments sake
dpad-dpad
analog stick- left analog stick
c buttons- right analog stick
a/b/x/y -x,[],/\,0
z-r1
r-r2
l-l2
start-start.
bottom line:
ps3 will never work directly on a gamecube/n64. unless your willing to remake a ps3 controlle,r than make the wireless interface, at which point you'll be clever enough not to dablle on about button locations.
ps2 already does work directly on gamecube, to goto n64 you could just build the cube 64, (fully customizable buttons).

Interesting, I was under the impression that an N64 controller used a system involving LEDs, photosensors, and a shutter wheel for the analog stick (see http://nfgworld.com/mb/thread/447-Ninte ... t-s-Inside), and last I saw, the N64 doesn't HAVE an X or Y button. And the N64 C-buttons line up pretty closely with the PS2 symbol buttons if you think about it.blaze3927 wrote: the cstick does use potentiometers, whole point of it being a c stick, and if your wanting to replace c buttons then you can easily mod the ps2/3 analog stick to be digital.

As for attaching it to the N64? Just run wires from the buttons on the PS2 board, out the place where the stock cable goes, and into a box, where they'd attach to the board of an N64 controller in place of the stock buttons. (The box isn't absolutely necessary, it just looks nicer that way, and helps prevent damage.) I'd try using the wires out of a network cable or two, and shrink-tubing them between the controller and the box to keep them together and prevent damage. (Possibly even try magnet wire to make it thinner, except that stuff's more work to solder, easier to damage, and may even be too thin.)

Do this:
C pad---right analog
A-------circle
B-------X
Turbo A--triangle
Turbo B--Square
R-------R1
L-------L1
Z-------R2/L2
Analog--left analog
Dpad----Dpad
Start----Select/start/PS button/analog button
I could make this custom controller for you, if you like.
C pad---right analog
A-------circle
B-------X
Turbo A--triangle
Turbo B--Square
R-------R1
L-------L1
Z-------R2/L2
Analog--left analog
Dpad----Dpad
Start----Select/start/PS button/analog button
I could make this custom controller for you, if you like.
Cheers,
