PCp

Post by cennar »

ok if you are going to make a PCp you first have to understand that you are going to have to make some compramizes.

first is size. PCs are still pritty big and heavy (i'm not talking about cases or PSus, pcs have heavy mobos)

next is power. depending on what you are wanting to cram in to it you may not be able to power it, like grapix cards and Tv-tunners.

now space. these tthings are getting smaller but not for portables, they are being designed for less desk space and noise reduction so your going to have to work with some odd shapes and sesitive heat sinks.

you have to under stand that thease are not going to be an ezy job, depending on the board you might have to rfemake the PSu all togethr or re place a ton of componets to get smaller size power and heat.. its not a beginers project. please consider other posibilitys first Pocket PCs or notbooks can be addapted in to decent handhelds.

Who would have thought it: me, replying to a thead about PCp's. It isn't like I post in EVERY active PCp thread. It is my opinion that this thread should have been named "Mostly untrue arguements against the portable PC projects".

Cennar said that compromises must be made. I agree with that statement-> you aren't going to be playing Half-Life 2 or Unreal Tournament 2004 on a PCp. If you're lucky- and you don't mind poor battery life- you might get Q3A running. However, much else was not completely correct.

"first is size. PCs are still pritty big and heavy (i'm not talking about cases or PSus, pcs have heavy mobos)" -> mostly untrue, depending on whether you only consider Desktops as PCs. Generally, PC denotes a computer with an x86 compatable CPU. Mini-ITX motherboards are very small at 6.7 x 6.7 inches, and I personally purchased a motherboard only 3.9 x 5.7 inches in size.

"next is power. depending on what you are wanting to cram in to it you may not be able to power it, like grapix cards and Tv-tunners." -> right on, cennar.

"now space. these tthings are getting smaller but not for portables, they are being designed for less desk space and noise reduction so your going to have to work with some odd shapes and sesitive heat sinks." -> this is the same as with the size arguements you offered. Mini-ITX mobos are tiny, and the 3.5 industrial boards are even tinier. Mine barely needs a heatsink, meaning that it is scarcely thicker or larger than a PCI card.

Everyone loves blabbering about OQO's or U50/U70's. Sure, you could pay 2000 dollars for one of those, or you could build a nice PCp for as little as 250-300.

I'm done ranting now.

yes but unfortunitly most people wanting help on a PCp are not going to order a new mother board. witch is key to getting it portable. your not going to grab what ever PC you have laing around you have to look at small stuff.. Also i do recall that some one once asked how do you cut a mother board smaller. *NEVER EVER CUT A MOTHER BOARD*

and your right there are a lot better not quite off the self parts people need to look at before making a disision. but your still going to be dealing with a PCp bigger than say 2 or 3 GBOs, Even when i got bored and mocked up a Nano PCp it was still pritty hefty.

but right on the beigest thing before you anounce a PCp project is rechearch, if not it looks like a majoir noob post *every XBOXp*

"yes but unfortunitly most people wanting help on a PCp are not going to order a new mother board." --> Sorry cennar, I misunderstood your post :? That is a good point.

I take it that no one has successfully built an XBOXp? I suppose that would be pretty hard, considering that the XBOX does use a lot of PC components, none of which are exactly energy efficient.

I have officially begun actual construction of my PCp, but due to horrific time constraints I'm going to build it a heck of a lot larger than otherwise necessary. Actually, the majority of the system will be composed of D batteries, and so will most of the weight :P I'll post pics sometime.

Well, it'd sure be able to play more than my PCp :P Yer still not going to get HL2 or UT2004 on it like some people want to.

You have a point, if I had the money, I'd buy ANYTHING
