Tested the SNES...sigh...the screen does not work

Post by ChesStrategy »

Obviously, I'm trying to make SNESp, except of my own custom design.

Im still using Ben's book as the backbone for the circuitry part (so its not totally different)

Being a very careful person, I always test the SNES to see if it works after every possible step I could possibly test it. Thus, I left the original SNES power adapter jack (I think it accepts 9V~10V) and the original A/V jack intact. (to test the hacked SNES on regular TV)

To be able to get my hacked PSone screen to accept video, I soldered a wire from under the SNES board with the correct pin on the A/V jack as Ben stated in his book

and the other end of the wire was soldered to the video input on the PSone Screen. Both the PSone screen and the SNES run off of their original power adapters and the video wire seems soldered securely....

yet when I turn on both the SNES and the PSone screen, the LED mod turns on, and I assume the SNES is on, but no video appears on the PSone screen.

I really need some help on this, and would be glad to answer any questions.

wait...I noticed many people talking about RF interference and shielding? could that be the problem? Would no shielding cause no video to appear?

Not likely, my video wire is just an IDE wire with exposed ends which were soldered. Possible, but probably not the case as I see it. Although sheilding is probably grounded and thus I will repeat everyone elses advice on making sure the grounds are hooked up.

Ok...having been frustrated with this problem for awhile, I decided to desolder and resolder a lot of stuff back to the way it was before
(as though I did not take apart much of the SNES) so that I can test the SNES on the TV again to see if the SNES broke.

I wat able to change the power source to a 8 "AA" battery pack full of Ni-MHs, and plugged the SNES's original cable to the A/V out jack...

At first, there was no video on the TV also (I was annoyed), so (thinking it might be interference, I took the 7805 regulator off the heat sink (listed in the book)

screwed it back on the the original heat sink/shield of SNES.

I then screwed the heat sink/shield onto the board again.

The video now works YAY!....however...
I now have the same problem Sweebez had (that no one was able to figure out:)

Hey guys thnx for your help..however I actually think it was interference

Because after I 'fixed' the video problem on the TV, by putting the shield back, I went to resolder all the wires and grounds to the screen again, but this time leaving the shield/heat sink (that the regulator was attached to) attached to the SNES board.

YAY! the video works now on the screen! :D

Now the only problem left is the sound? Do you think its possible to use Ben's secret areas to retrieve left and right audio and solder wires from those places to A/V jack pins? Since I want sound on the TV also, not just from the screen. :?:
