Haunted360 - What Electrical Component is this?

Hi. I have seen these before, and I have an understanding of what they may be.

However, I would like to know what it actually is.


Here is an image if one I have found, from a PS1 Memory (3rd party) Card.

It is NOT mine. I just need to know what it is before I remove it as I am sizing down through Eagle for practice PCB work.

There are 2 in this image below as you can see. There the 2 shiny black circles.





Now, if I remove that 'heatpaste' / 'glue' (?), will there be a chip underneath?

I don't see a chip, because if I look under the thin PCB (on mine) there are no pinouts that I can see (unlike the memory I can see on it). Just the pads / paths going to knowhere, and then ending.


Any one know what they are?

Usually those are the main die of a custom-designed chip covered with epoxy instead of put into a normal package. Lots of cheap electronics (throwaway items, toys, and knockoffs, NOACs, etc) use epoxy blobs instead of "real" chips because they're significantly cheaper.

It's highly unlikely you'll be able to remove the epoxy without damaging the chip.
