Powering an n64 using a cpu power supply?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Powering an n64 using a cpu power supply?

Post by cloyster »

I wanted to know if this is possible since PSUs have the required voltages (12v, 3.3v) but I'm afraid that the amperage would be too high.

Any recommendations?

There's no such thing as too much amperage, current is a total available amount of electricity; a circuit will only take what it needs.

There is such a thing as too much voltage, which is like electrical pressure.

Yes, you could power an n64 with a pc power supply, but be aware that for a pc psu to output, a certain minimum load is required, and certain pins on the psu connector have to be toggled, etc.

There are guides for converting an atx psu to a benchtop power supply, I'd start there, and then wire that up to your N64.

Could you use the molex connecter form the power supplie for the n64.

[5+, G , G ,12+]
the 5 volt line would get regulated down to 3.3v.
the 12 volt line would get the 12 volt line on the n64
Options: You don't need an additional switch, just connect the green and a black wire together. The PSU will be controlled by the rear switch, if there is one. You also don't need an LED, just ignore the gray wire. Cut it short and insulate it from the rest.
Green and black wire on the 20/24 pin connector.
