Splitting a GameCube controller

Here's the design. Now I know I'm probably going to need two controllers, one for the left side and one for the right, but how can I do that? Can I saw the unused parts of the controllers off?

And for the thing that senses if the disc cover is closed or not, do I just solder the two wires together?
