Is this controller joystick moddable?

Hey guys, I recently bought a 3rd party N64 controller, and opened it up and it looks like it uses the same type of joystick setup as the original N64 controller.

So this time I want to ask, and make sure the controller I buy will be able to take a gamecube joystick.

This is the controller I'm looking at buying: Nintendo 64 N64 Turbo Analog Controller Pad FIRE RED

So, the big question is. will I be able to replace the joystick of that controller with a gamecube joystick?

That has the same internals as the YOBO and retro-bit controllers.

The stick is potentiometer-based.

Just thought I'd say the one I got originally was this: NEW white Game Controller For Nintendo 64 N64 system

it's the same shape as the official controller, only difference is the buttons are more firm (harder to press) and the analog stick is more crappy.

I'm not 100% sure it doesn't use pots, but it does have the same bulky analog stick thing as the original.

it connects to the board with 4 wires. like this:




is there a chance I can still use the controller I have?

but it doesn't connect up like a gamecube stick at all -.- I don't get it.

the pins that this 3rd part controller has connected together would be either x/y with vcc, or x/y with ground (if it is wired with pots like a gc joystick).. ..which doesn't make sense? right?

Every n64 stick is moddable if you think about it even the first party sticks (although you need some extra circuitry for the first party ones) luckily for you though this controller needs no extra parts (except the analog stick of your choice of course).

I have used that controller and put in in an officilal shell, you can get the up, down, left, right to work but the forward diagonals dont seen to work. I've tryed everything I can think of. It's just a terrible controller.

Woah, thanks for the pic! that's exactly what my sticks like (well, the wiring that is) guess there's hope after all. I just hope I don't run into that diagonal problem that Diminuendo ran into =/ ah well, no harm in trying! and if it doesn't work, it's only a waste of $10USD, not the end of the world

I wired mine up just before and did some testing. I was hoping I could leave the gamecube c-stick on the board it comes on and just wire to the 4 wires coming off it.. ..but that didn't work, for some, now, obvious reasons

after I removed the analog stick from the board and wired directly up to the pots pins it worked but the values were all wrong. the N64 controller went: left: 0 - - middle: 128 -- right: 255 in values (values from a joypad controller mapping program called 'Controller Mate' on OSX) but with the c-stick hooked up the values were something like: Left: 78 - - middle: 128 - - right: 138 ..so as you can tell didn't work too well, tried it out on Super Mario 64 and you can only just walk. However, I didn't run into that Diagonal problem Diminuendo had. Although diagonally down to the left might not have worked, couldn't quite tell, but I think it was fine.

So my solution! I just popped the pots off of the C-stick and took the Pots out of the analog unit that came with my N64 controller. I'm just going to attach the N64 Pots to the C-stick. Will take some hot-gluing, but shouldn't be too hard, although for some reason I don't have a hot glue gun! So I'm gonna go out and buy one tomorrow and get this thing working!

A soldering iron and hot glue gun are your best friends. Don't leave home without them!

I can't believe I forgot to buy one of the most important tools of a portabilizer -.- I have about every other tool you could think of, fyi This: ACCESS PRO TOOL KIT V3 is awesome. build quality isn't outstanding, but it's all sturdy enough, and will last a good while. especially all the bits, and they're the most important bit. lol, pun

Don't get a battery powered one unless you buy an extra battery. I didn't used to have a spare battery, and it was extremely frustrating to run out of juice and have to completely stop your work and wait for it to charge. You'll be better off with a corded one.

Agreed, I've already picked the one I'm getting. definitely corded. I remember when I bought my drill I decided to save $10 and went with a battery one, worst choice ever ..and because it was a cheap one, it doesn't even last off battery long. I managed to cut 4 holes with a hole-saw bit out of mdf.. ..and that used an entire charge ..I'll probably wire it up to take mains power lol, it's useless as it is now
