the following walk through is a guess and not been attempted yet
1. remove front cover
2. put LEDs in the corners of the screen
3. use some kind of 3v voltage regulator or resistor or whatever to make 6v 3v so it will work with LEDs
4. connect the 3v to the LEDs
5. connect the 6v to the batteries
6. put cover back on
disclaimer: any damage to the caculator or you is not my fault. you are doing it at your own risk

I might actually try this, because I find it really hard to see sometimes. Let us know how it works out when you do this.

I think i'm just going to add an external 3v because for some reason my batteries seem to drain really fast. (Maybe i'm just playing to much Pheonix during algebra :P ) I'l probably also put in an on-off switch.

O yey my radioshack finally got some LED's in stock! (better get some)

I usually test my batteries when I change them, and I have found every time that the first battery is 0.3V, and the rest are still 1.5V.

The batteries that came with it lasted for about 8 months, and since then they last like a month.

I'd consider doing that second one, with the EL panel, I love blue backlights.

1.5V may not be enough to power the LEDs. I can't find the LEDs on the pae, it is all just ads. Post some specs if you can.
