I realize that these things are fairly expensive, in the $100 range, but if you have someone make you one of these from scratch, they'd likely charge you several hundred dollars.

Holy cow, I thought you were kidding when you said $100, so I looked on ebay. They really do sell for that much...

I do remember these, they got banned from my elementary school because kids were paying attention to these instead of classwork. I've used one, but I never bought one since they got banned at my school. I should've bought one...they weren't expensive back in the day, maybe $20?
