You go to here, upload the image, copy the direct link that it gives for the image, and paste that here.

Locally storing everyones' avatars would make the site take up even more space and bandwidth than it already does. We couldn't even make it drag-and-drop if we wanted to. Web browsers don't work that way.

Here's a simple guide on how to upload your avatar to Tinypic and make it work (spoilered because it's a long picture):

EDIT: I forgot to mention it in the image, but if you replace the ".jpg" on any Tinypic URL with "_th.jpg", it spits out a small thumbnail. The quality isn't the greatest, but it's small, it loads fast, and it's good enough in a pinch.

Yeh, seriously.... There needs to be a smaller avatar size limit.
