PS2 controller on PS3 help

My sister gave me an adapter that lets you hook PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube controllers to PC. I hooked it to my ps3 with a ps2 controller attached and it works except that all buttons are backwards including triggers. Like x does circle, circle does x, square does triangle, triangle does square, r2 does r1, l2 does l1 and viceversa, start does select. The only things that work right are the analog sticks and the d-pad. Does anyone know what could be the cause and possible cure to this problem or is it not going to work. I also hooked up a Gamecube controller and the analog sticks do not work.
