Its not a question, its an idea of mine.
Well we all know Nintendo is porting and making a number of rail shooters for the Wii, considering their control scheme its decently easy to do so. I think its awesome, I've already played a few so far and am quiet happy.
BUT...
I have this idea in my head. I was thinking sure......you can get a Wii zapper or a Nyko Perfect shot, but its still quiet bulky and hard to use when touching other buttons besides B.......at least when you require the Nunchuk. Thinking on this I wanted to cook up an interesting mod for looks, with a little more functionality. Of course this is going to require me to tear up a Wiimote.....but so what just like $40.
I want to splice it into a guncom from an arcade machine, such as Time Crisis. My first general idea is just to get it into like a gun so to say, but I'm actually wanting to shoot for one that has a solenoid that gives it that authentic action. Problem is, getting a replica or replacement of a Guncom designed for Namco's Time Crisis.......is just way too expensive (replacements that include the full number of electrical components contained within the guncom). I've searched Ebay.........
AND
Most solenoids, especially designed for such games as Time Crisis runs on about 24v. Ouch.........
There are just the gun halves and the top slide halves.

They are cheaper, but the solenoid still presents an issue in multiple ways; they are expensive and require too much juice for a handheld device that operates on about 3v(Wiimote).
So a big tackle for me would to develop a lower power consuming solenoid device that could replicate the cocking action as the typical arcade guncoms. AND develop a method to either if it just responds to the B button or possibly the small rumble motor inside the Wiimote.
Heres a sample of a replacement solenoid for a Namco guncom.

Now I could add a better battery to the mix and possibly ramp up the volts and regulate it down the line for the wiimotes functions, but I still want to enclose this all in the guncom....which are decently bulky i suppose.
Considering how wide the PCB is inside the wiimote I might have to mount it sideways and remount the CCD camera in the upright position. Would that pose any issues with the accelerometers?
I also plan to still allow it to function with the Nunchuk by mounting its port in the hole in the handle of the guncom that ties it down to the arcade unit.
Any suggestions or Ideas would greatly be appreciated!

Re: Guncom for the Wii?
Yes, as any movement would be 90 degrees off what they're supposed to be, and some rail shooters require motion in game (i.e. Umbrella Chronicles you have to move the Wiimote left and right to dodge boss attacks, or different things to throw of zombies).Would that pose any issues with the accelerometers?
There's a handful of Wiimote in a gun shell mods out there. I was planning one my self. I even bought a ps2 guncon2 to use, since they a good button and d-pad layout already for a wii gun mod. However, I will not be going that route as a gun with integrated Wii Remote has come out. You might consider picking one up even if you decide to mod an arcade gun, seeing as how the guts are gun shaped, and weird mounting should not be needed.
A for the solenoid, you could go with a lower voltage one to force back the slide. One of my PSX guns has a powered slide, that just uses the PSX's 9 Volt power.

Seems I found one.

Still do not have a lot of info on it in regards to the voltage required for its solenoid, but its promising.
Debating for that original arcade look or just settle for modding something like this.
Still Open to Suggestions.

Re: Guncom for the Wii?
Err, OK... The Crossfire gun is now only $28, a decent price drop over when I was last looking at it, and is cheaper than even the Nyko Wii Wand. Using that as part of the mod seems the best course of action. IMO, solenoid slides are a neat gimmick, but do nothing for gameplay, and would probably get annoying in a home setting where you are using it for much longer periods than typical arcade plays.rikitheshadow wrote:Bump
