Adding Ac adapter to portable PS2p

Making a ps2p, it will be running 8AA batteries.

So here's the problem, im using a 7" LCD from a portable Curtis 8433 DVD player, ive already taken out the guts and have it up and running, (will post pics soon). Anyways i dnt have the 9v rechargable battery that goes with the dvd player, so im going to just add the 8 AA hooked into the + and - spot where the original battery was. So if i was to have the rechargable Ni-mh AA batteries and i were to hook in the ac adapter would it begin to charge the batteries? or can i somehow add a AC plug without it charging anything?

i beleive the original battery was a lithium, im gonna use these

Might sound confusing but thats were im stuck right now.
