I can't charge my portable while it's on, but what if I installed a seperate power port to the system which would turn the system on when I plug in a 7.5v adaptor? That way I could charge the system and play it at the same time.

How is this system powered because it could be a lot easier than that. If you have a dedicated battery charger outside your portable that you need to remove your batteries to use then your way is the easiest way. This is more common for people using camera batteries.

If however you are using a batteryspace battery with a protection circuit and charge cuircuit attached then why bother with having a different plug. Say you need 12V for the battery charger. Assuming you don't already have a regulator on the 12V line then you need to put a regulator that will regulate what comes from the plug down to what your battery voltage usually is. Because you are running this off the wall just use a linear regulator like an LM317 or a fixed voltage equivalent with a higher current rating. Finally attach the regulated supply onto where the battery would usually go. You may want to disconnect the battery terminals with a DPDT switch.

If you use the psone screen then the power adaptor that comes with that is of fairly good quality for this kind of thing.

yea im using batteryspace batteries (7.4v 5000mah) comes with built in protection circuit and currently im using a 8.4v 1.2a charger (from battery space) and currently I have it wired up so you can only charge the system while its off.
