Quick question for PC builders (or people who know PCs)

I've been looking into buying the parts for a new computer recently and ran into a potential problem. I already have the power supply I'd like to use (salvaged from my last computer that I bought it for) but while looking at motherboards, I hit a snag. The motherboards I'm looking at have 4 pin power connectors next to the processor socket; however, upon closer inspection, it's actually an 8 pin connector with 4 of the pins covered by a black plug. My question is, will a 4 pin power connector be sufficient (which is what my PSU has) or would I need to buy a newer PSU with an 8 pin connector? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

I'm pretty sure the 4 pin connector would work (if it wouldn't, why would they put the cover there), but depending on the age and wattage of your current PSU you'll probably want to get a new one anyway. It's cheap insurance for the safety of your parts, and if your old one is less than 500 watts you might have trouble with beefy video cards.

mmm, if the other connector is covered, and the 4 pins "free" socket is compatible with your 4 pins plug, you probably can get it working with your suply, anyway old power suplies may are not good lor high overloaded PC (for example PCs with a good graphic card/s or several hdd connected, non external powered usb devices can also issue this) my advice is test the PC with your old PSU, and if it dont provide enough power, get a better psu, but you will not lose anything testing it

It's only a couple years old (though I didn't use it for that long, the PC had been shelved due to an unknown [now known] problem). It's a Raidmax RX-500S. It's got 20+4 pins for the motherboard, the extra 4 pin for the processor, and one 6 pin for my video card. I'm hoping it'll be enough...

yep,I posted the mesage arround 15 mins before bicostp, and toggled to other windows and purposes, and when I was closing some inactive tabs at my browser, I noticed that my post failed, when posted it again, someone posted before xD , yep, it is weird ;D

the link is from the one you mentionated, it provide 500w, I supose you will not have any problem with it.

Im cuarently using a 500w psu with 5 internal hdd, lots of usb stuff , some of it not powered by external suplies,4 pci cards, and I also have a HD3850 graphic card wich require an extra power connector, I also needed to add/solder more conectors to the psu cause it havent enough of them to power all my internal devices.

I think it probably will work

If you need to upgrade thats a great psu for the price.
