LED broke my N64? *EDIT* It work's now/pictures of new N64

Post by Schmeman »

So I decided I was going to completely change the look of my N64 by spraypainting it white/black and changing the LED to green. So I did, and it looked pretty sweet but then I started changing the LED. After I switched it out I decided to test to see if it worked, and it did. I put my N64 together, popped in Majora's Mask and got ready to play. However, this time it didn't turn on. Did I do something wrong to break my N64? Maybe I bought the wrong LED?

Put back the Red LED to see if it works. f it does that its not fried and maybe you have a LED that uses to much voltage.

Nope it doesn't work with the red either. Looks like my N64 is fried. Does anyone know the voltage of the LED that comes with the N64?

hook it up to power and using a multi meter you should find the voltage of the led

Make sure the memory expansion pack is plugged in.

Yeah, i agree with the guy above me, dont use expansion pack games to test your system. That pack itself causes all sorts of problems when you are taking it out and putting it back in.

Also, IIRC, the power LED comes directly from the main CPU power rail. (3.3v). Its located right near the RAM. So maybe you shorted out something nearby...

If the led does not even turn on, Id look for a short then wait a few hours for your power brick to reset.

people have had problems with their N64s not turning on after you pull out the expansion pack, your system shouldn't be fried, if you just pretend the n64 is a wireless router and turn it off for 10 seconds and plug your expansion pack back in it should be ok... atleast, it was for me when I did it

Hey thanks for your comments guys, turns out that the plug I was using all of a sudden stopped working between the initial test and the test after screwing everything back together... which is really odd. But after plugging it into a different outlet it worked fine. Who knew it was so simple.. :P

Anyways here are some pictures of what the result's were.

Both my friend and I decided to change our N64's. Here is the first one which is mine. The "Frost" look.

Still need to put some electrical tape behind the N64 logo so the light doesn't shine through.

And here is my friends N64. The SUPER AWESOME NICKELODEON N64!

Making these was pretty fun but shouldn't have been as frustrating as it was... stupid outlet.

The power block itself will stop working for 'a few hours' if you have shorted it out. This will happen if, say, you put the expansion pack in backwards while testing it without the shell.

Are you positive it was the outlet and not just the amount of time you waited?

Anyways, good job, I like the white one. Very... Wii.

Yeah I'm sure it's the outlet. Unfortunately it won't work at all anymore :(
