Installing old school games on xbox hard drive?

I was just wondering how some of you install, arcade, nes, snes, etc. games to your hard drives? I had a friend a few years ago that had an original xbox with hundreds of old games ripped to his hard drive and was wondering if I could do this on my 360 or PS3? I'm sure he was running some sort of emulator and mod chip, I've tried them on my computer before, but wasn't for sure how he did that on a console.
