How good are the refurbished ones?
Could I just buy the arcade version, and then buy a bigger harddrive?
Also, would I still be able to go Live?

I've never bought a refurbished unit, but my friend's old 360 got the RROD and MS sent him a refurb. It still works fine and I don't notice any issues with it when I go to his house.

Yes, however if you don't buy it new or used from a trusted store, make sure you test it out because there is a slim chance the person got banned for changing the DVD drive's firmware and then attempted to resell it so they can buy a new unbanned 360.

Found that out the hard way... XBox died after about 10 hours of use (was only on 5 minutes that day). Sent it to get fixed, only to have it returned unfixed because it had been opened.

Idiots - the thing would have still been under warranty when I sent it in, so I don't know why they didn't.

Now I need to buy a new one. Least the hard drive and controller are still good.

Microsoft doesn't touch anything that has its warranty seal broken. For all we know, it could be easily fixed, but they don't want to risk it.

On a side note, you might make some decent money back by selling the broken one here in the forums.

No, you misunderstand - if the prior owner hadn't opened it, it would have still been under warranty. I was saying that the previous owner should have sent it in for repair rather than fixing it himself. Pronoun confusion, grr!

Also, I will likely do that - I'm sure there's someone who'd take it off my hands and fix it. I'm planning on buying a brand-new one anyway (a Jasper-chipset with a full warranty).
