Safe to grab 12v off of an xbox original?
I have the earlier version that has the single-row connectors. I know 12v comes from it, but would it be safe to run a ps1 screen off of it? I don't want to overload it.
The optical drive will not be installed while I have the screen attached, because I have it softmodded and will run games off the hard drive. I was thinking of just wiring a 7808 to it and the xbox motherboard, with a picopsu. I would think it would be alright, since the hard drive doesn't suck up much juice.

I don't think a softmod will cut it. I'm pretty sure you'll get an error on start up if no DVD drive is connected, so your going to have to do a TSOP flash or install a modchip in order to get it working without one.

If you leave the DVD Drive's board plugged in you can fool it into thinking the DVD drive is there (always open). It doesn't take up to much space.Zero_D wrote:I don't think a softmod will cut it. But if you don't want to half-ass it, get a Modchip or flash the TSOP.

This is true - ran into the same problem. I'll be flashing my TSOP.Zero_D wrote:I don't think a softmod will cut it. I'm pretty sure you'll get an error on start up if no DVD drive is connected, so your going to have to do a TSOP flash or install a modchip in order to get it working without one.

Yes, I'll probably be flashing the tsop then. After I rip most of what I need, I'll probably only keep the dvd drive board if it's really tiny.
Also wondering, can I take just any xbox dvd drive and use it with my xbox? I have one the original tompson drives, and I've heard that they crap out after a while.

Yep, should be interchangable for original XBox.

Yes. I have a Samsung drive I can sell to you. It's the best DVD Drive for the Xbox.Zeturi wrote:Also wondering, can I take just any xbox dvd drive and use it with my xbox? I have one the original tompson drives, and I've heard that they crap out after a while.
PM me if you want it.

Possibly in about a month from now, when I start work again, but not till then. My three month long "vacation" has been a bit rough money-wise for me. Good to know the drives are interchangeable.Harshboy wrote:Yes. I have a Samsung drive I can sell to you. It's the best DVD Drive for the Xbox.

Ah, that's pretty cool. Would something like this work on a PS2 or Wii?Harshboy wrote:If you leave the DVD Drive's board plugged in you can fool it into thinking the DVD drive is there (always open). It doesn't take up to much space.

I wouldn't bother doing anything with a phat PS2, and I don't know, but I probably.Zero_D wrote:Ah, that's pretty cool. For the Wii, yes it works. People have taken out the bulk of the drive and put 2.5" Hard Drives in it's place for the USB Loader.
Re: Safe to grab 12v off of an xbox original?
Not to go off topic here, but the best DVD drive for the xbox is not the Samsung (as popular opinion believes) it is the LG. With one wire soldered you can get the LG to play all media. If you get the LG-8163 and flash it with the firmware from the original LG drive it takes a few more wires but you get the same result. The 8163 does sound like an airplane though.....
Samsung drive is decent but there were multiple versions of it, some would do everything some wouldn't. The LG drives were some of the last to come out so they tend to have been used a lot less and have a lot longer shelf life in them. For what you are intending on doing, I would just plug in the board from the smallest PC DVD drive/CD drive you can find and it will work. Otherwise yeah, hardmod/tsop..

I'm thinking about changing this thread to a build log... but I've made three other build logs that never came to fruition. Grrr.... what to do?!

Just because it is relevant and I love bringing old threads back from the dead -

covers how to run your xbox without a DVD drive, without a modchip/TSOP flash.

Back to topic
12V will fry the ps1 screen. So use a 7808 regulator to get it to 7.5-9V (9 might be pushing it...)
