PS2 DRE Problem

I've attempted to fix my original PS2 using this method but everytime the disc spins, the laser adjustment gear turns back to it's original location (which won't read discs). How do I get the gear to stay where I set it without turning back? Or does anyone have another suggestion for dealing with the problem? Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I turn the system on and just before the disc spins, it makes a grinding/stuttering noise THEN it spins.
