how to controle volume

how to controle volume

i need to build a little device that will take in red and white audio signals, and output them into a headphone jack, but i need to be able to make it louder or quieter with like a knob or something. i drew a diagram of what i wanna make

i just need to know how to achieve the bit in the middle. any clues would be greatly appreciated

Hmm, I'd try using a pot.

But I don't know how you would set up the circuit. Try wikipedia and google

yup, that was the ticket, just stuck a dual gang potentiometer between the two points, and it works perfect!!

You dont want to put a variable resistance in series with the signal...

You want to make a voltage divider to ground with a 'log' pot (as opposed to 'linear')

Otherwise there is no guarantee that the full range of the pot will be used, and no guarantee that the volume will increase evenly (using a linear pot it will increase exponentially). This is how every volume knob you've ever turned is wired.

I typed "volume knob wiring" into google. This was the first result. Not to complain (Im complaining) but why do people want to wait 5 hours for a forum response when google has all the answers in the world?
