computer problem

OK a wile back I ran a serch for all video files on my computer then I opened one that I had no idea what it was then my computer retarted itsself by just shuting off with no save or any nomaral shutdown prosses then terned back on

so now the problem is now meny video files cause that to happen it did not start happening till I did the thing above

I am runing windows xp

how do I fix this?

Try re-booting in Safe Mode and opening the file again.

Could you post your computers hardware specs? And what media are you trying to run in what player? (WMV in Media Player 10? Quicktime? .rm in Real?) That would help me give you a more specific answer.

If it just shuts down when your trying to open or run a program its because the system crashed. To prevent this is the future go to I believe its control panel (sorry I'm in linux now) and I think its system settings or something like that. There will be a box and it says something like reboot system if failure or what not.

After that I'd say try and open it again and see what error it is.

if the problem occured not too long ago u can use system restore
start
accessories
system tools
system restore
if it is set right you can restore ffrom like a year

not according to my virus scan I now think it a bug in the newest verson of windows media player for mpg2's now that I think about it happned right after I updated it I just switched mpg opening to anouther media player good enoth

So.... QuickTime player works fine?

Sounds like the newest version of WMP is too draining for your PC. I'd switch back to version 9. (me myself, on all my non-XP machines, I run 6.4.2835423 or whatever it is with the Windows Media 9 codec package installed.)

Oh so I'm not alone in having that stupid bug where you system just crashes when playing a DVD. I got mine about a year ago, there are ways around it but doesnt work well if you like say anime with japanese dialoge and english subs. Go into the drive and right click the .vob file (might take some trial and error) and watch the movie on segment at a time.

^I do not have that problem though I usually use power dvd to play dvd's and now mpgs also

not enoth memory is not the problem sometimes it happens right when I open the file sometimes when I close the player

Never use System Restore, its bad for your pc, get something else like PowerQuest Secondchance

i have not known any thing to be a problem with system restore, your just probally thinking about when you install programs and then go back to another point in the pas and then you have broken links....thats not harm thats just broken links that are easily fixed by

1) reintalling the app
2) or deleting the broken application links

also if you hit F8 whil you boot you get the safe mode screen, in XP theres a selection for "Last Known Good Configuration"....try it out some times it works...

i use it some time but its usually overclock related (why it fixes but it does)

Use Windows Media Player Classic

You can get it with a Realplayer and a Quicktime codec, so you don't need those junk bloatware programs, too... RealAlternative and QuickAlternative.
